Virtual Tour Stop #3
Chemistry Instrumentation

Jackie and Trisha using the Varian INOVA Unity 300-NB NMR Spectrometer. This 300 MHz NMR is a mid-field instrument equipped for variable temperature, inverse detection and broad band studies. With this instrument, up to 60% of the elements in the periodic table can be observed. Another view that shows the entire instrument:
If you are not familiar with what instruments cost, you may be surprised! This nmr spectometer cost almost $300,000 and was paid for by a grant (written by Dr. Hulce) from the National Science Foundation.

Tour Stop 1. Meet the freshmen faculty and visit a General Chemistry lecture and lab.

Tour Stop 2. Meet the sophomore faculty and visit an Organic Chemistry lecture and lab.

You are at Tour Stop 3. See our instrumentation.

Tour Stop 4. Visit an undergraduate chemistry research laboratory.

Tour Stop 5. Let's walk through the Chemistry Department and meet a few people!

Tour Stop 6. Join us for some fun!

Tour Stop 7. Daily life of a chemistry major.

Rezene and the Varian SpectrAA-200 — one of our atomic absorption instruments.

Kayli and Jenna in Physical Chemistry Lab using the Parr Solution Calorimeter to determine enthalpy changes when two liquids form a solution.

Here Pat is working on the Varian Carey 3 Ultraviolet/visible Spectrophotometer. This instrument can be used for a variety of studies including reaction kinetics. Most of these instruments are used by the chemistry majors, although freshmen and sophomores use some sophisticated equipment in their laboratory coursework as well.

Nicollet Avatar 360 FTIR

This Hewlett Packard 5890 Series II Gas Chromatograph is used in our sophomore organic chemistry lab.

Cameron making a measurement of refractive index.
Dr. Fletcher and Nicole working ith the new gc-ms. This instrument allows one to determine the molar mass of compounds and their component parts.

The Finnigan TSQ 46 Mass Spectrometer
